Art, Arquitecture and New Materialities

This project aims to study and develop new methodologies to embrace the role given to the materials along the Art and Architecture histories from a new materialistic frame of thought. How can we generate tools to study artistic practices empirically? Through which tactics can we ensemble and narrate alternative temporalities in Art History?  In which ways the concept of “materialism” is articulate- if it is so- in contemporary artistic production and exhibitions labs and centers? Art, Arquitecture and New Materialities

Art and Design by other means

Vermouth-Session! [Pecha-kucha + Round-Table]

On the one hand, there is an ever greater tendency for art and design research to establish and enhance its links with science and technology studies (STS), this has happened for a variety of methodological and epistemological reasons. On the other hand, while STS were born within the social sciences, they have extended their field of action to other disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas, related to the arts and humanities. In fact, art and design shares a mutual approach with STS that is beneficial for both sides considering their drive to transform and to be transformed.

The purpose of the present session is Art and Design by other means

ECSA 2016 and the future of citizen science

Liebe readers,

I just came back from a vibrant 3-day conference in Berlin by the European Citizen Science Association. Sitting at the gloomy hacklab of the autonomous social center ELI La Clandestina, I will attempt to outline my experience as an academic interested in public participation, but also as a citizen working with science and technology on a communal and political level.

As an academic, the conference represented a great overview of the vast and heterogeneous landscape of citizen science. As a brief introduction, the notion is generally related to participation, alternative expertise and the inclusion of particular publics in the processes of science and technology. In the past two decades, the practices and formation of communities around citizen science have largely increased with the introduction of digital infrastructures, to a point where it is difficult to talk about it without mentioning other notions such as wisdom of the crowds, big data or smart citizens. As I understood, this is also the general vision of the European Union commission, which has made citizen science one of the key frameworks in its agenda on open science and data-driven innovation – the transformation and opening up of science through ICTs (Open Science, EU). Thinking about art from the prism of speculation may involve the creation of alternative futures. Introducing doubt, babbling, the “what ifs”, counter-memory against the ideal need of a primal origin (or source of meaning where we recognise each other) and being open to discontinuity, chance and materiality in history means asking ourselves if it is possible to both make and think about art in different ways. An ethnography within the design processes of smart things/smart citizens and their visions of future

The 2nd of May took place Débora Lanzeni’s oral defence at IN3-UOC in Castelldefels, Barcelona.  Congrats,  a brand-new  Phd. at mediaccions!

Her doctoral thesis examines the entanglement of material processes by focusing in the ordinary processes of designing smart technologies in the so-called “Internet of Things” and Smart City project in Europe, analyzing how visions of future and moral values are intermingled in the creation of digital technologies.
