On the one hand, there is an ever greater tendency for art and design research to establish and enhance its links with science and technology studies (STS), this has happened for a variety of methodological and epistemological reasons. On the other hand, while STS were born within the social sciences, they have extended their field of action to other disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas, related to the arts and humanities. In fact, art and design shares a mutual approach with STS that is beneficial for both sides considering their drive to transform and to be transformed.
How are our lives being changed by the rise of machine learning, big data and predictive analytics? Why are the models of 20th century privacy and transparency struggling to keep up? In this talk, Kate Crawford considers the intimate landscapes of data prediction, and discusses why we urgently need a strong framework for data ethics.
I just came back from a vibrant 3-day conference in Berlin by the European Citizen Science Association. Sitting at the gloomy hacklab of the autonomous social center ELI La Clandestina, I will attempt to outline my experience as an academic interested in public participation, but also as a citizen working with science and technology on a communal and political level.
As an academic, the conference represented a great overview of the vast and heterogeneous landscape of citizen science. As a brief introduction, the notion is generally related to participation, alternative expertise and the inclusion of particular publics in the processes of science and technology. In the past two decades, the practices and formation of communities around citizen science have largely increased with the introduction of digital infrastructures, to a point where it is difficult to talk about it without mentioning other notions such as wisdom of the crowds, big data or smart citizens. As I understood, this is also the general vision of the European Union commission, which has made citizen science one of the key frameworks in its agenda on open science and data-driven innovation – the transformation and opening up of science through ICTs (Open Science, EU). … ECSA 2016 and the future of citizen science
Thinking about art from the prism of speculation may involve the creation of alternative futures. Introducing doubt, babbling, the “what ifs”, counter-memory against the ideal need of a primal origin (or source of meaning where we recognise each other) and being open to discontinuity, chance and materiality in history means asking ourselves if it is possible to both make and think about art in different ways. … Call for papers

Masculinity studies emerged in the 70s but have become more generalized in the last 20 years, after Connell’s famous Masculinities and her theorization of hegemonic masculinity. However, they are still scarce within social sciences and in gender studies in particular, which have mainly sought to address women’s absence from the canon and to uncover power relations in gender relations. … Men in Movement: Trans/forming Masculinities in Politics, Care, and Media
